As a pregnant mother anticipating the arrival of my second child and going through quite a challenging pregnancy, I sought a relaxing weekend getaway to bond with my little one before our family expands. Bailiffscourt Hotel & Spa in West Wittering seemed like the perfect destination—a blend of historical charm, beautiful surroundings, and a touch of luxury. However, while the experience had its highlights, it also fell short in some areas. Here’s a detailed review of our weekend escape.
West Wittering Beach was one of the main draws for choosing Bailiffscourt. Just a short walk away (the hotel has its own access the beach), the beach offers expansive shores with pebbles and shells—ideal for an adventurous family walk. We started every morning with a refreshing walk along the shore with our dog – a wonderful way to connect and talk before our new arrival.
With private access to the beach and during the summer months, the chance to enjoy Snakes & Ladders – the close proximity to the beach is certainly a plus
Activities for Children: Room for Improvement
Bailiffscourt does offer a few activities for children, but I found the options somewhat limited. The hotel’s sprawling grounds are perfect for little ones to explore, and we enjoyed a pleasant walk through the gardens. However, organised activities or entertainment specifically for young children were lacking. While my child was content with simple outdoor play (thank goodness our dog tagged along), it would have been nice to have more interactive options, especially considering the hotel’s reputation as a family-friendly destination.
Dining Experience: Underwhelming and Limited
The dining experience was, unfortunately, the most disappointing aspect of our stay. As a pregnant woman with heightened taste sensitivities, I was looking forward to indulging in delicious meals, but the reality was underwhelming; the menu was repetitive and and offered limited choicesThe children's menu was rather boring and my little bubba ended up having spaghetti bolognese most evenings. Breakfast was enjoyable but the breakfast room felt rather cold and unappealing.
Spa: A Missed Opportunity for Relaxation
As a pregnant woman, I was eager to enjoy some pampering at the hotel’s spa. Unfortunately, the spa was extremely busy during our stay, limiting my access to the facilities - there were quite a few hen-dos taking place that weekend. I was unable to book any treatments, but we were able to use the hotel's swimming pool and my little bubba had a great time practicing her swimming. It was rather chilly when we went but the outside heated pool did look fabulous – unfortunately, due it being heated – I could not enjoy it.
"The rooms at Baillifscourt Hotel were the highlight of our stay
Rooms: A Cosy and Comfortable Retreat
Despite the shortcomings in other areas, the rooms at Bailiffscourt were a highlight of our stay. Our room was spacious, beautifully decorated, and equipped with all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. The bed was particularly comfortable, providing much-needed rest as I navigated the final weeks of pregnancy. The bathroom was splending, featuring a deep soaking tub that was perfect for unwinding after a long day. The room’s ambiance was calming, and the views of the hotel’s gardens added to the peaceful atmosphere. In this aspect, Bailiffscourt truly delivered.
Surroundings and Walks: Connecting with Nature
One of the best parts of our stay was the natural beauty surrounding Bailiffscourt. The hotel is set in picturesque grounds, with plenty of walking paths to explore. These walks offered a chance to connect with nature, breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy some quiet time with my child. The surrounding countryside was tranquil and provided a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. While the hotel’s immediate facilities didn’t fully meet expectations, the serene surroundings made up for it, offering a sense of peace and relaxation that was much appreciated during this stage of my pregnancy.
Conclusion: A Mixed Bag
My weekend at Bailiffscourt Hotel & Spa in West Wittering was a mixed experience. While the rooms and surrounding areas were delightful, the dining options and spa experience were less than ideal. As a pregnant woman looking for a relaxing retreat, the hotel delivered in terms of comfort and tranquility, but the lack of child-focused activities, limited dining choices, and crowded spa facilities left me somewhat disappointed. With a few improvements, Bailiffscourt could be an excellent choice for a pre-baby or family getaway, but as it stands, I can only rate this our experience 6/10
