Picture this: an unspoilt Greek island where the pace is slow, the beaches are pristine, and the seafood is so fresh it practically swims onto your plate. Paxos, Greece, is exactly that, and our recent family holiday there was nothing short of magical. With two weeks to soak in the beauty of this hidden gem, we experienced everything from idyllic boat trips to late-night water taxis (not as relaxing as it sounds with a four-year-old and a baby). If you’re considering Paxos for your next family escape, here’s our honest and hopefully helpful guide.
Let’s start with the best part: Paxos is the epitome of unspoilt. Unlike some of the more tourist-heavy Greek islands, Paxos remains blissfully uncrowded, even during the busy season. It’s clear this is where the Greeks themselves come to unwind, adding to its authentic charm. The island is small, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in beauty. We were struck by how peaceful and serene it felt—no bustling crowds or noisy nightlife, just the sound of the waves and the occasional taverna music drifting through the air.
Paxos offers a delightful combination of pebble and sandy beaches, each with its own unique appeal. One day we’d be lounging on smooth pebbles at Ben's Bar, the next we’d be sinking our toes into soft sand at Mongonissi Beach (which is actually more of a bay). The crystal-clear waters were perfect for swimming, especially for the bubbas, who spent hours splashing around and and the eldest collecting shells and building sandcastles and towers from the pebbles. One of our favourites was Monodendri Beach, a pebbled paradise with shallow waters, ideal for young children and even better for adults, thanks to Ben's Bar. Ben's Bar is open from 10am and is a haven during the heat providing cocktails and refreshments throughout the day and serving up delicious lunches at the taverna (run by Ben's mum).
Paxos is home to several picturesque towns, with Gaios and Loggos being our top picks. Gaios, the island’s capital, is a vibrant yet charming town where we enjoyed leisurely strolls along the waterfront, stopping for gelato for bubba (a daily ritual) and frozen yoghurt with honey for me. Gaios has a wonderful array of little shops selling unique clothing, jewellery and interiors and definitely worth a peruse.
Loggos, on the other hand, was a more laid-back affair, with its colorful houses and quieter vibe making it the perfect spot for a relaxing lunch or early sunset dinner.
Speaking of food, the restaurants in Paxos are a foodie’s dream, especially if you love seafood. The proximity to Italy means you’ll find an array of pasta dishes alongside the freshest salads and grilled seafood. One evening, we dined at Taverna Vassilis in Loggos—ceviche, lobster pasta, and a Greek salad that was simply divine. My little bubba loved her shrimp pasta and left feeling entirely satisfied.
We also recommend booking a table at Erimitis restaurant which is situated on the spectacular cliffs of Paxos and offers the most breathtaking sunset views.
Our journey to Paxos started with a flight to Corfu, followed by a water taxi to the island. Now, here’s a tip: don’t take the water taxi at night with a four-year-old and a baby. We made a mistake by booking a late flight (as we often do) and spent the ride gripping the sides of the boat, praying for smooth seas. While we arrived safely, the experience would have been far more enjoyable in the daylight. So, learn from our error—book an earlier flight and enjoy the scenic boat ride without the stress.
We decided to split our two-week stay between two different villas on opposite sides of the island, and it was a fantastic decision. Moving halfway through the trip helped keep things fresh and exciting. The first week was spent in a secluded villa near Monondendri Beach. The second villa, closer to Gaios, offered easy access to the town’s restaurants and shops and had the most breathtaking views (although one would argue that it was slightly less practical for children). The strategy of changing villas if you can is something we highly recommend if you’re planning a longer stay—it’s like getting two holidays in one!

No trip to Paxos is complete without a boat trip to Antipaxos, home to some of the bluest waters we’ve ever seen. We set off early, eager to beat the crowds, and headed straight to Spiros’ Taverna for lunch. Here’s an important tip: stick to Spiros’ Taverna if you’re traveling with children. The other beach on Antipaxos lacks a proper docking bay, which can be tricky (and stressful) with little ones. We spent the day swimming, soaking in the sun, and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. We made sure to leave before 5 pm, as the waters can get choppy later in the day—a must if you’re with children.
While we stayed in villas, Paxos also offers some fantastic hotel options if that’s more your style. Here are three recommendations to consider:
Torri e Merli Hotel (5-star) - Located in Lakka, this boutique hotel offers luxury and tranquility in equal measure. With beautifully appointed rooms and stunning views, it’s perfect for couples or families seeking a high-end experience.
Paxos Club Resort & Spa (4-star) - A great family-friendly option in Gaios, offering comfortable rooms, a large pool, and easy access to the town. The spa is a nice bonus for parents looking to unwind.
Paxos Beach Hotel (3-star) - Situated right on the beach near Gaios, this hotel is ideal for families who want to be close to the water. The relaxed atmosphere and direct beach access make it a favorite for those traveling with kids.
Our family holiday to Paxos was an unforgettable experience, filled with beautiful beaches, delicious food, and plenty of laughs. Paxos’ unspoilt charm, combined with its friendly locals and stunning scenery, made it the perfect destination for a relaxing yet adventurous family getaway. Whether you’re planning a short stay or a longer break, Paxos offers something for everyone—just remember to book that early flight!
If you’re looking for an authentic, peaceful, and beautiful Greek island, Paxos should be at the top of your list. We’re already dreaming of our next visit, and we’re sure you’ll fall in love with it too.
